Description

Shakshouka Toast is a vibrant and flavorful dish featuring eggs poached in a spiced tomato and pepper sauce served atop crispy toasted bread. This easy-to-make recipe combines Mediterranean and Middle Eastern flavors, ideal for a satisfying breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Tomato Sauce:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 bell pepper, diced (red or yellow)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 cup crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: pinch of chili flakes

For the Toast and Eggs:

  • 2 slices thick-cut bread
  • 2 eggs
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Sauté Onions: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and sauté for 2-3 minutes until softened and translucent.
  2. Cook Bell Peppers: Add the diced bell pepper to the skillet and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes until the peppers are tender but still retain some bite.
  3. Add Aromatics and Spices: Stir in the minced garlic, ground cumin, and smoked paprika. Cook for about 30 seconds to let the spices bloom and release their flavors.
  4. Simmer Tomato Sauce: Pour in the crushed tomatoes, then season with salt and black pepper. Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer gently for 5-7 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  5. Toast Bread: While the sauce simmers, toast the slices of thick-cut bread in a toaster or a skillet until golden and crisp.
  6. Assemble Toast with Sauce: Spoon the tomato and pepper mixture generously over each slice of toasted bread. Using a spoon, make a small well in the center of the tomato sauce on each toast.
  7. Add Eggs: Crack one egg into each well created on the tomato-coated toast. Carefully transfer the toasts to a baking sheet.
  8. Bake Eggs: Place the baking sheet with the prepared toasts in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C). Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the egg whites are set but the yolks remain soft and slightly runny.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Remove from oven. Sprinkle fresh cilantro or parsley and chili flakes if desired. Serve the shakshouka toast hot for a delicious and comforting meal.

Notes

  • Use thick-cut bread to support the tomato sauce and egg without becoming soggy.
  • Adjust the chili flakes to your spice preference for mild or more heat.
  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a sprinkle of feta cheese before baking.
  • Fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley add brightness and balance the spices.
  • Make sure to watch the eggs closely in the oven to achieve your preferred yolk consistency.
